Felt the need...

*Note: I began writing this around 9 pm and got sidetracked, we are not watching movies at 1am... So I'm sitting here with my roommate Meg watching Julie and Julia while drinking Cupcake Vineyards Moscato D'Asti. I felt that this particular wine and movie was worth a post. (I mean this blog IS about all things fashion right? The costumes are impeccable to the Julia Child's portions and whats more trendy right now than a cupcake?) First the wine. Cupcake makes especially fruity and sweet wines that will easily appeal to the "non- wine drinker". I've had both the the Sauvignon Blanc and the Moscato but the Moscato is my favorite hands down. It has the subtle flavors of peach and other tropical fruits and bottled with fizzy deliciousness. It was wonderful with my chicken dinner and my ice cream tonight. I originally encountered this delicious treat at the Sew In Love wedding dress show and benefit, as it was a sponsor. Cupcake Moscato. yummy. On th...

September- EWF OMG where have I been you ask? Good question since I don't even know some days. After Collection and the Fashion show ended my life did not slow down in the least bit. Right after I wrapped up with school it was literally right back to the dressform, as I had a prom dress to make for the daughter of one of my mom's co workers. I wont post the photo of her, since I didn't ask her permission, but you can see the gown. front back After that I started my internship at Catherines, part of the Charming Shoppes (Ascena Retail?) corporations. (They also own Fashion Bug and Lane Bryant). So far I like it and have learned a lot of how industry works and the importance of understanding business- kinda leaving me wishing I had taken a management or intro to finance course.. ah well c'est la vie I'll learn as I go, that's the point of intern and apprenticeships, no? The Product Development team is an awesome bunch, they are lots of fun. I have ...

Fashion in Motion: The PhilaU 2012 Fashion Show

As the weekend winds down I can finally recap some of the events- basically the Annual Fashion Show put on by my school every year- this past Saturday in fact. My family (below) came to support me, as well as my boyfriend, roommate, my bestie and her boyfriend. As always it was a lovely affair, with my evening kicking off with a reception for the VIP guests being honored at the gala that was held later that evening. There I met Alan Sirkin, an alumnus and the President of PVH Co,(Phillips- Van Heusen) the parent company to many high name brands including Tommy Hilfiger, Van Heusen, Calvin Klein, Geoffrey Beane and others; as well as Francis Shammo, CFO of Verizon via his son and girlfriend who were very interested in what "fashion designers do". After a couple glasses of wine, two cheese plates and several rounds of mini-crabcakes  and chili chicken skewers, it was time to head downstairs to the show. It was very surreal as many of the girls will be graduating in two wee...

Sometimes I Get a Good Feeling...

I'm a happy lil camper right now. Contemp is done and I got into the Annual Fashion show all in the same day! And I thought of this song. And I wanted to dance. So I did, by myself in my room. Its such a relief knowing that my work was strong enough to be accepted, it makes the upset stomachs and all nighters well worth it. Now I can focus on making my mini-line for my interview with Charming for  Friday. Collection is not just a class, its definitely a labor of love, a lot goes into creating things interesting enough to considered different, or avant garde or just worthy of attention. Like my class judge told me, "its often that one little thing that makes it safe that makes it forgettable; so be bold". I did, and I guess it paid off. I honestly couldn't be happier. This weekend I'm also going to start a new page on my blog, "Random Tutorials (Having Nothing to do with Fashion)". lol. But its going to be a collection of simple tutorials of some of m...

Motherland Redux Preview Party!

Upendo- Chopteeth Afrofunk Band  Oy. Collection officially kicked my butt this past week thanks to the addition of academic and co-curricular distractions and hangups. But its finished and off for Fashion Show judging whatnot. I'm happy with it for the most part, of course there's things I'm a little concerned about, but nothing so major; I think I have at least a 75- 80% chance in getting all 5 pieces in. Anyway, what's done is done. If you recall from my earlier posts I channeled West African wax prints (ankara to some) into Western society silhouettes (echoing a similar idea from my wedding dress). The whole process was a learning experience- from the fabric sourcing, to manipulation (including a temporary fear of color resulting into a heavy hand of black that eventually got nixed), to "industry" critique to actually putting the looks together. I even legit had a major brainfart the other day when my professor said we were supposed to keep a journal for...

They're Sexy and They Know It

Image
Ok this post is not about LMFAO AT ALL. No offense to the scrawny lil things. This post is about this guy. or this guy... or dare I even say, this one... Okay. Now that the mancandy of the AFC is out the way I'm writing about the launch of the new Nike NFL gear. If you weren't hip before read up here . Nike is taking over Reebok's old spot of merchandiser to the masses by designing new digs for the players, staff and fans alike. And I must admit, they look HOT.  Not hot as in "ugh, I'm sweating" but "oh, Tebow is making me sweat" hot. Sexy. I'm not even sure if you can use "hot", "sexy" and "Tebow" in the same sentence, I feel like God wouldn't approve.  Ah, oh well. Back to the uni's. Vikings 2012 Here's why I like them: They didn't make drastic changes for one. Nike has done some outlandish things to the poor college schmucks but the tone in the NFL is subdued. (At least they snuck ...
