Motherland Redux Preview Party! Get link Facebook X Pinterest Email Other Apps By Whitney Nicole - April 16, 2012 Upendo- Chopteeth Afrofunk Band Oy. Collection officially kicked my butt this past week thanks to the addition of academic and co-curricular distractions and hangups. But its finished and off for Fashion Show judging whatnot. I'm happy with it for the most part, of course there's things I'm a little concerned about, but nothing so major; I think I have at least a 75- 80% chance in getting all 5 pieces in. Anyway, what's done is done. If you recall from my earlier posts I channeled West African wax prints (ankara to some) into Western society silhouettes (echoing a similar idea from my wedding dress). The whole process was a learning experience- from the fabric sourcing, to manipulation (including a temporary fear of color resulting into a heavy hand of black that eventually got nixed), to "industry" critique to actually putting the looks together. I even legit had a major brainfart the other day when my professor said we were supposed to keep a journal for the class (my face (o_O) ) then I remembered DUH I have a blog (idiot, haha). That's how fried I am. But now we wait. On Tuesday I'll learn the fate of my garments and the Fashion Show. On a happier note-- we had to take photos to help the dressers figure out the styling (even though they still get it wrong) so I can treat you to a preview of my collection! They're just on the dressforms, unedited; all the special hair and makeup and whatnot wont come till after the final critique. Enjoy! the "Bantu" Knot- front dress. Back, faux two piece styling Hausa Pants and Bustier (interchanceable with Igbo Skirt and Blouse) Back, exposed metal zipper and sash detail. Igbo Skirt and Blouse. Mock sarong skirt with draped pleats, sweetheart plunge neck. (Interchangeable with Hausa set) Back, twist keyhole detail. So yeah, thats the jist, the dressforms don't quite do them justice.. so keep your eye out in a few weeks for the good pictures. I'm off to bed now. -xo Get link Facebook X Pinterest Email Other Apps Comments
Getting "Me" Back By Whitney Nicole - December 03, 2013 According to my husband, I'm going through a quarter- life crisis. (2 years early). I'm having problems finding solace in where my career and work life are heading, and where I want it to be. I don't remember if I discussed it here, but back around my birthday in October I forfeited my only vacation (and the first as a married woman) for a big job interview, that ended up not materializing into the dream job I have been praying for. It left me pretty broken, because I had spent about a month going through the motions, gave up my vacay, and took off work (who were all too happy to put me back on the schedule). It left me broken as a wife because I have a strong sense of marital duty, and while I'm on my way to being a great housewife, its not how I envisioned my life. Much of American society functions off of dual incomes and I didn't see me as being any different. I WANT to pay the mortgage, or at least all of the utilities and shared resources. That's is nowher... Read more
The Rules of Retail By Whitney Nicole - October 08, 2013 I've worked in retail since I was 17. It started off as an easy summer gig. Fast forward to last January. I had been applying to various design jobs following my graduation in December. One by one each opening was filled, and I wasn't the one filling it. Not wanting to be a freeloader to my parents, and wanting to prove myself not lazy to my boyfriend, I relented and picked up two retail jobs. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics , the majority of new jobs created come the retail industry. In August alone 44,000 of the 169,000 jobs created were in retail. That's 26%! Unfortunately, most people lose their humanity when they come to shop. In my experience, department stores have it the worse. I work both at a department store and a mid range boutique chain and I leave the department store hating life every night I work there. Customers often take advantage of the cliche "the customer is always right", then wonder why the cashier is rude. So to save us fro... Read more
Fashion in Motion: The PhilaU 2012 Fashion Show By Whitney Nicole - April 30, 2012 As the weekend winds down I can finally recap some of the events- basically the Annual Fashion Show put on by my school every year- this past Saturday in fact. My family (below) came to support me, as well as my boyfriend, roommate, my bestie and her boyfriend. As always it was a lovely affair, with my evening kicking off with a reception for the VIP guests being honored at the gala that was held later that evening. There I met Alan Sirkin, an alumnus and the President of PVH Co,(Phillips- Van Heusen) the parent company to many high name brands including Tommy Hilfiger, Van Heusen, Calvin Klein, Geoffrey Beane and others; as well as Francis Shammo, CFO of Verizon via his son and girlfriend who were very interested in what "fashion designers do". After a couple glasses of wine, two cheese plates and several rounds of mini-crabcakes and chili chicken skewers, it was time to head downstairs to the show. It was very surreal as many of the girls will be graduating in two wee... Read more
